Scrollworks
The Scrollworks program is designed to prepare students to play in an ensemble: one of our youth ensembles, a praise band, a school orchestra, or their own rock band. We teach more than how to play an instrument. We teach music.
Our lessons are always free, but, as the saying goes, there is no free lunch. To make progress, the student must be dedicated, work hard, and practice regularly. If a student arrives at a lesson unprepared—without their music or not having practiced—our teachers may send that student home.
We do our best to lend instruments when available or to guide students to inexpensive sources. Students are also invited to practice during any of our teaching times—or even to visit the MYOCA office to practice.
Currently the program has three components—free Community, After School, and During School lessons:
- We offer Free music lessons that are open to everyone in the community. More information and the teaching schedule are on our Scrollworks' Learn page.
- Small group lessons are offered after school at NorthStar Youth Ministries. These are open to elementary school students in the Smithfield neighborhoon. In addition to piano, guitar, strings, winds and drum instruction, our lessons at NorthStar Youth Ministries include music theory and computer drill. There is a sliding scale tuition fee for participation in the Northstar Youth Ministries enrichment activities. Students have an assigned lesson time and teacher. They are required to have an instrument available for practice at home.
- Guitar and keyboard classes are offered during school at Center Street Middle School.
