The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra with Ginger Zingara performs in the lobby of the Alys Stephens Center before the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra concert on May 5, 2013. The performance is in honor of the Birmingham: Fifty Years Forward celebration of the Civil Rights movement. This piece is 'Russian Sailors' Dance'.

Scrollworks percussion teacher Sam Herman and his group Iron Giant recently performed for students. Other members of the band are Seth Noble, Brett Huffman, and Justin Wallace.

What is the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra working on these days? These videos are to inspire our students to practice (it's fun to play along) and to show our parents and audience members what they look forward to hearing on May 5 at the Alys Stephens Center prior to the ASYO concert and our spring performance on May 11.
Amazing Grace has great significance as Birmingham is celebrating 50 years of civil rights (see my previous blog for the back story to Amazing Grace: No Civil Rights in Music?) so the MYOCA will be performing this arrangement by Del Borgo:
Largo from Dvorak's New World Symphony was influnced by the African-American spirituals that he heard when he visited the United States. "Goin' Home" was later adapted by a black composer Dvorak befriended while in the USA . It is truly one of the most beloved slow, lyrical pieces in the orchestral repertoire:

The Scrollworks String Orchestra led by Ginger Zingara with Bridgette Lee assisting perform 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' on Sunday, December 16 at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
This is the first instrumental ensemble for these intermediate string players.
