General

Scrollworks teaches orchestral instruments in group classes with an emphasis on ensemble/orchestra playing. Each term there is a $25 registration fee to participate. All classes and rehearsals take place on Saturdays.

Scrollworks Academy teaches private lessons on piano, guitar, drum set, voice, violin, viola and cello. These lessons have a per lesson fee that ranges from $5 to $25 on a sliding scale based on income and family size. Most lessons take place on Saturdays. Depending on teacher availabilty, some lessons will take place on Thursday and Friday this spring.

All activities take place at Highlands United Methodist Church, 1045 20th St S (at the fountain at Five Points South).

The teachers, volunteers and staff are committed to giving your child access to the highest quality music instruction and ensemble experience at a very affordable cost. It's hard work and we take it seriously. We expect our students and their families to work hard and take the opportunity we are offering seriously.

Attendance is critical to success!
Orchestras, ensembles and even group classes depend on every member to do their part. When a musician is missing, the orchestra music doesn't sound like it is supposed to. The progress of the entire group slows down when one student is absent and then needs special attention to catch up.
There are 12 sessions in the Spring 2012 term, plus a jury (testing) day and final recital and concert. Please review the calendar below to check the dates. If you know your child will miss more than three of the sessions, please do not participate this term. (Attendance is taken in every class and considered for placement in the following term.)

Practice Makes Perfect!
Each student and orchestra member is expected to practice every day. (For ages 8+, a minimum of 30 minutes per day.) It takes 10,000 hours to reach proficiency. Start now!

Please read all the information on this page before clicking on the appropriate link below. Email Ms. Nordlund with any questions.

Performance Today
12:00-12:30 PM

Every Scrollworks student is expected to attend "Performance Today." (Academy students are strongly encouraged to arrange their schedule so they may attend.) Faculty, students, and visiting artists are invited to perform for the student body. Students (and their families) may bring their lunch and eat while watching their peers and teachers perform. Students have the opportunity to ask questions after the performances, thus providing an interactive experience for all.

Required Performance Attendance
Each Scrollworks and Academy student is required to attend two live music performances outside of Scrollworks during the term and turn in a program or ticket stub and an essay on the performance. Click here for details. (Satisfying this requirement will be considered for placement next term.)

The following two classes are open to any student (new or current) that meets the requirements:

Advanced Choir

Scrollworks Spring 2012 Calendar

Registration

The registration fee for Scrollworks is $25. This is the only cost, but your child's name will not be placed on the roster until the registration fee has been paid.

There is no registration fee for Academy lessons. To receive a reduced rate, parents must provide financial information for the sliding scale calculation. (This information will be kept strictly confidential.) We will email you the results of the calculation. If you accept, your child will be assigned a lesson time. Payment for the first four lessons is due within two weeks of receiving a time. Otherwise, the time will be released to someone else.

Every student is required to have an instrument to practice on at home. We will loan an instrument if one is available. There is a $25 deposit on loaned instruments which will be refunded when the instrument is returned. We can provide information available on discounted rentals and rent-to-own plans for our students.

If any of the costs are an issue, please email to make other arrangements.

Current students must take care of any outstanding balance before registering. Should you decide not to participate after registering, we will gladly issue a refund of the $25 fee through January 25.

All registrations for the Spring 2012 term will be done online. Just open the form, fill it in, and click submit. You may save the completed form on your computer.
